What is the IPL® Photofacial Treatment?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL®) is an innovative and gentle non-surgical treatment that uses broad spectrum light (not lasers) to treat a number of skin conditions. The procedure can be used to treat hyperpigmentation, sun damage, rosacea, and even to remove unwanted body hair. Using the latest technology, IPL® can restore a radiant complexion with very little risk or discomfort. During the photofacial treatment, IPL® technology uses high energy light waves to minimize or eliminate the skin problems. The light also stimulates collagen growth, which naturally leads to more radiant facial skin. The treatment is usually done in several sessions.

Am I a Good Candidate for IPL® Photofacial Treatment?

Blotchy, sun-damaged or discolored skin, age spots, large pores, freckles, spider or varicose veins are all conditions that can be successfully treated with IPL®. The procedure is also convenient for those with busy schedules because it’s quick and requires no down time. Unlike lasers, IPL® can also remove unwanted body hair can also be removed regardless of your skin type or hair color. During your consultation, Dr. Rubinstein will discuss the procedure with you and help you decide whether IPL® is right for you.

What Happens During the IPL® Photofacial Procedure?

To prepare the skin, a cold gel is applied. The skin is cooled, and a hand-held instrument which transmits broad spectrum light into the tissues is placed gently on the skin. The light specifically targets unwanted pigmentation, small blood vessels (broken capillaries), or body hair. The treatment is not painful, but if you are sensitive, a topical anesthetic can be used to numb the skin that will be treated. You will remain awake for the procedure, which will be conducted in Dr. Rubinstein’s office. A few treatments (usually four to six) may be required to achieve your desired results. Each treatment generally lasts 30 minutes or less, and treatments are repeated every month or two.

What Can I Expect During Recovery?

You are allowed to go home very quickly after your procedure, and you can return to work immediately. The skin may become pink or slightly red, and in some cases, there may be some mild swelling for a few days. You can wear makeup right away, however, to cover up any skin irritation. Within a few days, you will begin to see the results of the treatment, as your fresher, more radiant skin emerges. Remember that your skin will be very sensitive to the sun. For a period of time following your IPL® procedure, you should avoid being in the sun and will need to wear sunblock whenever you are outside. Of course, sunblock will also help you to avoid future sun damage and age spots. Take care of your beautiful new skin!

Most health insurance providers will not provide coverage for the costs of IPL® treatments.
