The requirements for membership in the ASAPS are designed to encourage application by trained and experienced plastic surgeons who concentrate their practices in performing cosmetic plastic surgery of the face and the entire body. ASAPS membership remains an exclusive privilege for those surgeons who possess the necessary qualifications. Only about one-quarter of all American Board of Plastic Surgery certified surgeons have been accepted into ASAPS membership. Physicians who have been trained in specialties other than plastic surgery are not eligible for membership in ASAPS.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only member of the American Board of Medical Specialties that certifies plastic surgeons in the United States of America. Board certification requires a rigorous list of requirements including a written and oral examination, a review of a surgeons operative experience, and adherence to a very strict code of ethics. To maintain certification surgeons must continue their education throughout their career and are reviewed every few years to ensure that they are current. The only Board that officially certifies plastic surgeons in the United States is the American Board of Plastic Surgery. If you are considering plastic surgery, every surgeon you consider must have this certification to ensure that you will be in the hands of a properly trained, safe and ethical plastic surgeon.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is the largest plastic surgery specialty organization in the world. Founded in 1931, the society is composed of board-certified plastic surgeons who perform cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.
The ASAPS logo is “the mark of distinction in cosmetic plastic surgery.” The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), founded in 1967, is the leading professional organization of plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery who specialize in cosmetic plastic surgery.
ISAPS members are the worldwide leaders in aesthetic plastic surgery. To qualify for membership in ISAPS, plastic surgeons have to undergo years of surgical specialty training, pass qualifying and certifying examinations in their respective countries (board certification), and be members in good standing in their national societies of plastic and aesthetic surgery.
The American Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons has been established by plastic surgeons that specialize in body contouring surgery specifically for patients that have lost significant amounts of weight through non-surgical means such as diet or exercise or through the various bariatric procedures.
