What is Breast Enhancement Surgery?

The term “breast enhancement” is a medical term that doctors use to describe a variety of surgical procedures that lift, contour, and enhance a woman’s breasts. Some of these procedures may reshape the patient’s breasts or adjust the shape and position on the chest. Breast augmentations, breast reconstructions, gynecomastia correction, and breast lift surgeries are all common forms of breast enhancement procedures. Other breast enhancement procedures may include the removal of implants, breast reduction surgeries, and revisions to previous breast surgeries.

How Long After a Breast Surgery Consultation Is the Surgery?

Typically, the time between your initial consultation and breast surgery with Dr. Rubinstein will range from 1 to 6 weeks. The exact timing depends on several factors. One major consideration is Dr. Rubinstein’s availability, as he needs to block off adequate time to perform your procedure. Some patients also need a few weeks to prepare for surgery, which may involve stopping certain vitamins, medications, or drugs that could interfere with the treatment.

Is Breast Lift Surgery Covered by Insurance?

In general, breast enhancement surgery is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not typically covered by insurance. Insurance providers typically view breast surgery as an elective or aesthetic procedure rather than a medically necessary one. However, there may be exceptions in certain cases where breast surgery is considered medically necessary, such as:

  • Breast reduction for women with overly heavy breasts that cause significant physical symptoms such as chronic back/neck pain. Breast reduction is sometimes covered for men with gynecomastia as well.
  • Breast reconstruction for women who have undergone a mastectomy due to breast cancer or a preventative mastectomy.
  • Removal of breast implants, in causes involving ruptured silicone gel implants or implants causing complications like capsular contracture.

Dr. Rubinstein can help determine if your case meets the criteria for medical necessity for insurance coverage. It is also important to check with your specific insurance provider to understand their coverage policies and criteria for breast surgery.

How Much Does Breast Surgery Cost?

The cost of breast enhancement surgery can vary quite a bit depending on the complexity and extent of the procedure. The technique used and the intricacy of the case can both affect the total breast surgery price. At your consultation with Dr. Rubinstein, he can examine your anatomy and treatment goals to determine the right treatment plan for you. He will then be able to provide you with an accurate quote for your customized breast surgery procedure. We accept several different forms of payment for your convenience:

Questions About Your Facelift Surgery

What Happens During Breast Enhancement Surgery?

The surgical techniques involved in your breast enhancement surgery will vary significantly depending on the type of breast surgery you are receiving. Most breast surgeries are performed with general anesthesia to ensure your safety and comfort. After the anesthesia has been administered, Dr. Rubinstein will typically use some combination of the following incisions:

  • Inframammary Crease
    • Often used for breast augmentation, breast lift, and breast reduction, this is an incision placed along the fold beneath the breasts.
  • Areola
    • An incision around the areola of the nipple is commonly used in almost all breast surgery procedures. In many cases, an additional incision will be made extending downwards from the areola. These may be referred to as “lollipop” or “anchor” techniques, due to the shape the incision makes.
  • Armpit
    • Typically reserved for breast augmentation surgeries, an armpit incision may be sufficient for placing certain types of breast implants. This prevents any scarring on the breasts.

Through these incisions, Dr. Rubinstein will have access to the underlying anatomy, where he may place breast implants, remove or trim breast tissue, and lift, tighten or remove excess skin. After your procedure is complete, the incisions will be stitched shut and a compression garment will be applied.

What is Breast Surgery Recovery Like?

How Long is Breast Surgery Recovery?

The breast surgery recovery process is complex, as it requires an initial period of downtime, followed by some restrictions and mild symptoms, after which point patients can finally resume their normal lifestyles. Furthermore, the exact recovery timeline can vary depending on the type of breast surgery that a patient receives. For most patients, the general recovery timeline for breast enhancement surgery looks like this:

Week 1

During the first week after breast surgery, it is normal to experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort around the breasts and surgical sites. Pain and discomfort typically reach their peak in the first 3-4 days before starting to improve. Prescription medication is used to manage pain during the initial recovery period. Patients should limit arm movement and wear a supportive surgical bra around the clock for at least the first week.

Week 2

By the second week post-op, the worst swelling and discomfort has subsided. The initial set of sutures are usually removed around 1-2 weeks after surgery. Residual bruising, if present, continues to fade. Swelling decreases gradually over the next few weeks. Patients can start to resume light daily activities, but should still avoid strenuous exercise and activities that raise the heart rate or blood pressure.

Weeks 3-4

In weeks 3-4 after surgery, most patients feel ready to return to work, school, and other regular routines. Any lingering bruising typically resolves by 4 weeks. Swelling incrementally improves but may still be present a few months after surgery as tissues heal. By this point, patients are encouraged to begin gradually increasing physical activity.

Weeks 6 & Beyond

Around 6 weeks post-op, many patients are cleared by their surgeon to resume their full normal activities including more strenuous exercise like weight lifting. However, it may take 3-6 months for swelling to resolve enough to appreciate the final results. Scars from incisions will continue maturing for up to a year. While they appear prominent at first, scars fade and soften significantly with time. The final results emerge after approximately one year as residual swelling disappears completely and scars continue to mature.

Can I Breastfeed After Breast Surgery?

Women should delay their breast enhancement surgery until they believe they will no longer have more children, as the results of these procedures can be affected by changes to a woman’s weight or her hormones. In most cases, breast surgery should not affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed, but it is something you should discuss with Dr. Rubinstein prior to your breast surgery.

When Can I Wear a Regular Bra After Breast Enhancement Surgery?

The timing for transitioning from a surgical bra or compression garment to a regular bra after a breast surgery can vary depending on Dr. Rubinstein’s recommendations and your individual healing process. Typically, after the initial healing period, which is around 4 to 6 weeks, Dr. Rubinstein may allow you to switch to a regular bra. When transitioning to a regular bra, it’s generally recommended to choose a supportive bra with no underwire to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the incision sites. Soft, non-padded bras with wide straps and good support can be a comfortable choice during the early stages of recovery.

Is Breast Enhancement Surgery Permanent?

While the results of breast enhancement surgery are incredibly long-lasting, they cannot be considered permanent. The natural aging process will continue to affect breast shape and position over time. Pregnancy, weight changes, gravity, and hormonal shifts can cause breasts to sag or lose volume again years later. The type of procedure performed can also make a difference. For example, breast implants may need to be replaced 10-15 years down the road. A breast lift may need to be repeated in 10+ years as aging continues to occur. Breast reduction results are often very stable long-term if weight stays stable. Following all of Dr. Rubinstein’s advice for diet, exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices can help prolong your results.
