Is a Breast Lift with Implants Right for Me?

What is a Breast Lift with Implants?

A Breast Lift with Implants, also known as augmentation mastopexy or a breast lift with augmentation, is a surgical procedure that aims to address both the position and fullness of the breasts. This combined approach involves lifting the breasts to a more youthful and perky position while simultaneously increasing their size and improving their shape with breast implants. It’s an ideal solution for women who experience breast sagging due to aging, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, or breastfeeding and wish to restore or enhance their breast volume.

What Can a Breast Lift with Implants Accomplish?

  • Enhanced breast volume
  • Corrected breast sagging
  • Improved breast symmetry
  • Restored nipple position
  • Boosted self-confidence
  • Long-lasting and natural-looking results

What are the Different Types of Breast Implants?

The two main types of breast implants are saline implants and silicone implants.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater after being inserted, allowing for adjustable volume. Generally, saline implants offer a firmer feel compared to silicone options. In case of rupture, the saline solution is safely absorbed and naturally expelled by the body. However, they may be more prone to rippling, especially in patients with thin skin or little breast tissue.

Silicone Breast Implants

These implants are pre-filled with a silicone gel that closely mimics the feel of natural breast tissue. As a result, silicone implants are known for their soft, natural feel. In case of a rupture, the gel may remain within the implant shell or escape into the breast implant pocket, requiring regular monitoring with MRI or ultrasound.

Are You A Candidate For a Breast Lift with Implants?

Just about anyone who wants to improve the shape, size, and lift of their breasts would be a good candidate for a breast lift with augmentation. If you think you might be a good candidate for breast lift and augmentation surgery, the next step is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Rubinstein. During your consultation, Dr. Rubinstein can evaluate your goals and determine the optimal treatment options. This is an excellent opportunity to ask any questions about the breast surgery process. Dr. Rubinstein will explain what to expect before, during, and after surgery.

How Long After a Breast Lift with Implants Consultation Is the Surgery?

Typically, the time between your initial consultation and breast surgery with Dr. Rubinstein will range from 1 to 6 weeks. The exact timing depends on several factors. One major consideration is Dr. Rubinstein’s availability, as he needs to block off adequate time to perform your procedure. Some patients also need a few weeks to prepare for surgery, which may involve stopping certain vitamins, medications, or drugs that could interfere with the treatment.

What Size Breast Implants Should I Get?

Breast size and shape are important, so be honest and open about your expectations when talking with Dr. Rubinstein so that he can help you determine your perfect implant size. Dr. Rubinstein has developed a sizing process that enables you to see and feel different implant choices in a bra, in clothes, and in bathing suits, so you are confident about the size of your augmentation. Dr. Rubinstein never chooses implants in advance. When Dr. Rubinstein begins the breast augmentation procedure, he makes an incision, creates a pocket and places a “temporary” implant. He will then sit you up and test different volumes, as well as breast asymmetry. This is done because many times breasts are not the same size and one breast may need 300cc, while the other needs 400cc. Once the right volume for each breast is found, you will lay down and Dr. Rubinstein will put in the permanent implants. Dr. Rubinstein feels that his sizing process provides you with an accurate way to gauge the results of your augmentation.

What Happens During Breast Lift and Augmentation Surgery?

In most cases, breast lift and augmentation are performed on an outpatient basis. If your case requires more extensive correction, Dr. Rubinstein may schedule the surgery at the hospital. Local and general anesthesia are required for the procedure. For the surgery, Dr. Rubinstein uses the minimal amount of incisions needed to achieve the desired results. Incisions are frequently only around the areola, but he may use a combination of the following incision locations depending on the treatment plan:

Areola

An incision around the areola of the nipple is commonly used in almost all breast surgery procedures. In many cases, an additional incision will be made extending downwards from the areola. These may be referred to as “lollipop” or “anchor” techniques, due to the shape the incision makes.

Lollipop or Anchor Incision

Typically reserved for surgeries with larger implants or where more significant lifting is needed, this is a vertical incision that extends downward from the areola towards the inframammary crease.

Inframammary Crease

This is an incision placed along the fold beneath the breasts

Through these incisions, Dr. Rubinstein will insert your implants and position them properly in the breasts. Then, he’ll begin to remove the loose, stretched skin that allows your breasts to sag. After the skin is removed, Dr. Rubinstein tightens the remaining skin to lift the breast and nipple position. By doing this, he maintains the sensitivity in your nipples and gives the breasts a natural appearance. After the incisions are sutured closed, Dr. Rubinstein wraps the breasts with a compression bandage to promote healing and hold the breasts in place. On average, breast lift and augmentation take between two and five hours.

How Much Does a Breast Lift with Implants Cost?

The cost of breast lift and augmentation surgery can vary quite a bit depending on the complexity and extent of the procedure. The techniques used and the intricacy of the case can both affect the total breast surgery price. At your consultation with Dr. Rubinstein, he can examine your anatomy and treatment goals to determine the right treatment plan for you. What is the Breast Lift with Implants Recovery Process Like?

How Long is Recovery After a Breast Lift and Augmentation?

The breast lift and augmentation recovery process is complex, as it requires an initial period of downtime, followed by some restrictions and mild symptoms, after which point patients can finally resume their normal lifestyles. Furthermore, the exact recovery timeline can vary depending on the extent of breast surgery that a patient receives. For most patients, the general recovery timeline for breast enhancement surgery looks like this:

Week 1

During the first week after surgery, it is normal to experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort around the breasts and surgical sites. Pain and discomfort typically reach their peak in the first 3-4 days before starting to improve. Prescription medication is used to manage pain during the initial recovery period. Patients should limit arm movement and wear a supportive surgical bra around the clock for at least the first week.

Week 2

By the second week post-op, the worst swelling and discomfort has subsided. The initial set of sutures are usually removed around 1-2 weeks after surgery. Residual bruising, if present, continues to fade. Swelling decreases gradually over the next few weeks. Patients can start to resume light daily activities, but should still avoid strenuous exercise and activities that raise the heart rate or blood pressure.

Weeks 3-4

In weeks 3-4 after surgery, most patients feel ready to return to work, school, and other regular routines. Any lingering bruising typically resolves by 4 weeks. Swelling incrementally improves but may still be present a few months after surgery as tissues heal. By this point, patients are encouraged to begin gradually increasing physical activity.

Weeks 6 & Beyond

Around 6 weeks post-op, many patients are cleared by their surgeon to resume their full normal activities including more strenuous exercise like weight lifting. However, it may take 3-6 months for swelling to resolve enough to appreciate the final results. Scars from incisions will continue maturing for up to a year. While they appear prominent at first, scars fade and soften significantly with time. The final results emerge after approximately one year as residual swelling disappears completely and scars continue to mature.

Can I Breastfeed After a Breast Lift and Augmentation?

Women should delay their breast lift and augmentation surgery until they believe they will no longer have more children, as the results of these procedures can be affected by changes to a woman’s weight or her hormones. In most cases, this procedure will not affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed, but it is something you should discuss with Dr. Rubinstein prior to your surgery.

When Can I Wear a Regular Bra After a Breast Lift with Implants?

The timing for transitioning from a surgical bra or compression garment to a regular bra after a breast surgery can vary depending on Dr. Rubinstein’s recommendations and your individual healing process. Typically, after the initial healing period, which is around 4 to 6 weeks, Dr. Rubinstein may allow you to switch to a regular bra. When transitioning to a regular bra, it’s generally recommended to choose a supportive bra with no underwire to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the incision sites. Soft, non-padded bras with wide straps and good support can be a comfortable choice during the early stages of recovery.

Is Breast Lift and Augmentation Surgery Permanent?

Breast lift and augmentation surgery provides significant and noticeable improvements in the appearance of the breasts. However, it’s important to understand that while the results are long-lasting, they may not be considered “permanent” in the sense that they can last a lifetime without change. The natural aging process will continue to affect breast shape and position over time. Pregnancy, weight changes, gravity, and hormonal shifts can cause breasts to sag or lose volume again years later. Additionally, breast implants may need to be replaced 10-15 years down the road. A breast lift may need to be repeated in 10+ years as aging continues to occur. Following all of Dr. Rubinstein’s advice for diet, exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices can help prolong your results.
