Breast Lift and Augmentation in Miami, FL

For some women in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and South Florida, Adam J. Rubinstein, M.D., F.A.C.S., a board-certified plastic surgeon, recommends a combination surgery that involves both a breast lift and breast augmentation. A breast lift and augmentation are typically the best approaches for women who want multiple cosmetic improvements to their breasts, such as changing the shape, size, and position. The surgeries are especially beneficial to women who have breasts that sag or that have lost the natural fullness. Dr. Rubinstein performs the breast lift and augmentation during the same surgical appointment to ensure that you are completely satisfied with the results and minimize your downtime. The breast lift and augmentation will:
  • Add size to the breasts
  • Lift sagging breasts
  • Improve the breast shape
A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, will not change the size and shape of your breasts. Similarly, breast augmentation cannot correct breasts that hang lower on the chest. By performing the surgeries simultaneously, Dr. Rubinstein optimizes the results of your breast surgery.

Who Can Benefit from Breast Augmentation/Mastopexy?

Breast lift and augmentation are recommended for women who have breasts that are:
  • Too small and hang low on the chest
  • Asymmetrical in size, shape or position
  • Lacking firmness due to overly stretched skin caused by significant weight loss or pregnancy

What is the Breast Lift and Augmentation Procedure Like?

Breast implants are used for the breast augmentation to add volume to your breasts and balance your overall body proportions. As an expert in breast surgery, Dr. Rubinstein is able to correct any problems with breast symmetry through the use of breast implants. During your consultation, Dr. Rubinstein provides professional guidance to help you choose the right breast implant shape and size for your body. Dr. Rubinstein has all of his potential patients partake in a “homework” assignment to prepare for their consultation. You are asked to research such magazines as Playboy and Penthouse to find 5 or 6 examples of breasts you like and breasts you don’t like. Because all women have a size in mind, this is the perfect opportunity to have a candid conversation with Dr. Rubinstein regarding breasts that you consider “too big” or “too small”. When Dr. Rubinstein begins the breast augmentation procedure, he makes an incision, creates a pocket and places a “temporary” implant. He will then sit you up and test different volumes, as well as breast asymmetry. This is done because many times breasts are not the same size and one breast may need 300cc, while the other needs 400cc. Once the right volume for each breast is found, you will lay down and Dr. Rubinstein will put in the permanent implants. You will also choose between saline and silicone implants. Saline implants are filled after the implants are positioned inside your breast area, and silicone implants are pre-filled. The primary difference in these two types of implants is how your breasts feel after the augmentation, which Dr. Rubinstein will discuss in detail during your consultation. To lift your breasts, Dr. Rubinstein removes the loose, stretched skin that allows your breasts to sag. After the skin is removed, Dr. Rubinstein tightens the remaining skin to lift the breast and nipple position. In most cases, breast lift and augmentation are performed on an outpatient basis. If your case requires more extensive correction, Dr. Rubinstein may schedule the surgery at the hospital. Local and general anesthesia are required for the procedure. For the surgery, Dr. Rubinstein uses the minimal amount of incisions needed to achieve firm results.  Incisions are frequently only around the areola. Some patients will require a vertical incision and possibly others. He chooses incision sites that will minimize scarring. The implant is inserted through the incisions and positioned in your breast area. If you have saline implants, Dr. Rubinstein will fill the implants. Once he is satisfied with the breast augmentation, he begins to excise excess skin and lift the breast. He also repositions the nipple and underlying breast tissue. By doing this, he maintains the sensitivity in your nipples and gives the breasts a natural appearance. After the incisions are sutured closed, Dr. Rubinstein wraps the breasts with a compression bandage to promote healing and hold the breasts in place. On average, breast lift and augmentation take between two and five hours. Most patients are able to go home after a few hours of initial recovery. Dr. Rubinstein feels that his sizing process provides you with an accurate way to gauge the results of your augmentation. After surgery, his patients routinely report that their “size was just right,” “the size was perfect,” and most powerfully, “this is me!”

What Can I Expect During Recovery?

After the surgery, you will be a little tired from the general anesthesia, so someone will need to drive you home. You can shower after the surgery, but you should avoid taking baths. Dr. Rubinstein uses dissolvable stitches for the breast lift and augmentation surgery, and the stitches should disappear over time. Dr. Rubinstein does not use drains for breast surgery. For the first month after the surgery, your breasts and chest area will be swollen, tender, and possibly bruised. Dr. Rubinstein can prescribe medication to help with any discomfort. Because your breasts are swollen, you may not see the final results of your breast lift and augmentation. Your breasts may, in fact, appear much larger than you anticipated, but mostly due to the swelling. Dr. Rubinstein explains how you should limit your activities after the surgery. You should be able to resume minimal activities after one to two weeks, but you should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities until he releases you. Any touching of your breasts should be gentle, including during sexual activities. As the incisions heal, you may notice scarring that will lighten over time.
