What Is Nipple Reduction?

Our genetic makeup means that each us have nipples of varying shapes and sizes. Some may be prominent, while others may be considered “too perky.” If you are embarrassed by the shape, size, or prominence of your nipples, you should consider a nipple reduction procedure to correct the issue. Dr. Rubinstein performs nipple reduction procedures at our Aventura office and is able to safely reduce the prominence, size, and shape of your nipples.

Nipple Reduction Benefits

Women who have undergone nipple reductions report the following benefits:
  • Enhanced proportion of their breasts to their body
  • Improved self-esteem and body image
  • Less socially awkward and self-conscious

Nipple Reduction Surgery

Two primary techniques can reduce a nipple-areolar complex. One is the reduction of the actual nipple if it is too wide or too long. The areola is the dark pigmentation surrounding the nipple, and it may be perceived as too puffy or large. The areola and nipple can be reduced at once, or only one may be reduced. When the nipple is to be reduced, Dr. Rubinstein removes a section of the tip, then he sutures the skin to minimize length. He is able to reduce nipple width by reducing the circumference beneath the skin surface, then suturing the incision shut. These techniques can be performed during one session. The areola circumference can be reduced using a very simple procedure. First, a circular incision is created around the areola, and a section of the areola is excised. This leaves a circular scar that will fade in time. Many patients will not actually form a noticeable scar. Surgery results will be permanent. However, the breasts are still subject to normal aging and can sag over time.

Nipple Reduction Recovery

Most patients can resume normal activities within two days of their procedure. Any bruising can be expected to fade over the following days, and numbness will subside within one week. Any numbness or tingling experienced can be expected to diminish within six weeks of the procedure. For about one week after your procedure, you should avoid sleeping on your stomach. A soft sports bra can be worn for about two weeks, and your stitches will be removed within one week.

Would I Make A Good Candidate For Areola Reduction Surgery?

If your areolae are very large because of genetics, breastfeeding, or age, areola reduction surgery may be right for you. Although nipple reduction surgery is a simple procedure and virtually risk-free, you should know that once it is complete, there is no way to reverse it. The procedure can affect your ability to breast feed. For this reason, you should carefully consider whether you want the procedure performed. You should use your initial consultation with Dr. Rubinstein as an opportunity to have all of your questions and concerns fully addressed to your satisfaction. Reasons to have areola reduction surgery:
  • Areolae that are overly large or out of proportion to breasts
  • Irregularity or asymmetry between nipples following breast surgery
  • Left and right nipple asymmetry
Two weeks before surgery, you should be in good overall health and stop smoking so that you will heal properly after your procedure. You should schedule a consultation with Dr. Rubinstein to determine if you would make a good candidate for nipple or areola reduction.

How Long Should I Expect The Results To Last?

The results of the procedure are permanent, but you should be aware that normal aging will take place after surgery, so your breasts may sag or droop over time.

Can The Size And Shape Of My Breasts Be Enhanced Further With Other Procedures?

A breast lift, breast augmentation, or breast reduction can also be performed to alter the shape and size of your breasts, depending upon their current size and condition. These matters can be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Rubinstein.

How Much Does Miami Nipple Reduction Cost?

The cost of your nipple reduction will depend upon the number of treatments needed to correct your problem, as well as the extent of the surgery. Because most insurance companies consider this procedure to be elective, Dr. Rubinstein accepts payment in the form of cash, check, or credit card. Financing is another option. If you reside in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or South Florida, and are unhappy with the size and shape of your nipples or their proportion compared to the rest of your breast, you may be a good candidate for nipple reduction.
