Thinking About Rhinoplasty?
The nose is like the centerpiece of your face. When it is too small or too large, you feel self-conscious. If misshapen or deformed, it can also cause breathing issues. Board-certified plastic surgeon Adam J. Rubinstein, M.D., F.A.C.S., helps Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and South Florida breathe easy with the commonly requested rhinoplasty.
What Is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, sometimes referred to as a “nose job,” is among the most popular plastic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty may be performed to increase or decrease the overall size of the nose, remove a hump, alter the tip or the bridge of the nose, increase or decrease the width of the nostrils, or change the angle between the nose and upper lip. These enhancements typically result in a greater balance between all the facial features. Dr. Rubinstein offers both of the main rhinoplasty techniques, open and closed rhinoplasty.
What Types of Rhinoplasty are Available?
Open Rhinoplasty
In open rhinoplasty, incisions are made inside the nostrils and along the columella, which is the piece of tissue that separates the nostrils. This allows the skin to be lifted completely so Dr. Rubinstein can directly see and access the entire underlying cartilage and bone structure. This technique facilitates major reshaping and modifications to the nose. The small columella incision leaves a scar, but it usually fades over time. Although slightly more invasive, the open approach provides better visualization and access for Dr. Rubinstein to perform more complex revisions to the nasal anatomy.
Closed Rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty is often the preferred rhinoplasty technique when applicable, as it requires fewer incisions and produces no visible scarring. It is less invasive and better suited for minor changes to the bridge or tip of the nose. During a closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made inside the nostrils. Then, the skin of the nose is lifted up from the cartilage and bone underneath through the interior incisions. Dr. Rubinstein works through the nostrils to sculpt the framework into the desired shape.
What Can Rhinoplasty Correct?

- Misshapen nasal tip
- Small or narrow nose
- Misshapen nasal bridge
- Reshape a nose after injury
- Too large or too wide nasal bridge
- Deviated septum or other breathing difficulties
Are You A Candidate For A Nose Job?
Before considering rhinoplasty, you must have proper expectations for how many different factors including your bone structure, tissue thickness, and individual healing process affect your final outcome. To avoid disappointment, keep in mind that technical limitations, such as the overall shape and size of the nose, impact what can be done to correct the nose. However, if you are experiencing any of the cosmetic concerns or functional issues above, you may be a good candidate for a nose job.
If you think you might be a good candidate for a rhinoplasty, the next step is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Rubinstein. During your consultation, Dr. Rubinstein can evaluate your goals and determine the optimal treatment options. This is an excellent opportunity to ask any questions about the rhinoplasty process. Dr. Rubinstein will explain what to expect before, during, and after surgery.

Questions for Your Rhinoplasty Consultation
How Old Do You Have to Be to Get a Nose Job?
There is no set age requirement for rhinoplasty, but most plastic surgeons recommend waiting until the late teens when nasal bone growth is complete. Rhinoplasty may be considered for some female patients around 15-16 years old who have reached full nasal bone maturity as evidenced by x-rays. After age 18, both males and females have generally reached full nasal development, allowing for safe rhinoplasty with enduring results. While possible from the late teens onward, waiting until the early 20s allows the surgeon to fully assess if growth is finalized. Operating after development has stabilized helps ensure the permanent outcomes of rhinoplasty. Additionally, mental and emotional maturity are important when considering teens for rhinoplasty.
How Long After a Rhinoplasty Consultation Is the Surgery?
Typically, the time between your initial consultation and rhinoplasty surgery with Dr. Rubinstein will range from 1 to 6 weeks. The exact timing depends on several factors. One major consideration is Dr. Rubinstein’s availability, as he needs to block off adequate time to perform your procedure. Some patients also need a few weeks to prepare for surgery, which may involve stopping certain vitamins, medications, or drugs that could interfere with the treatment.
How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost?
The cost of rhinoplasty surgery can vary quite a bit depending on the complexity and extent of the procedure. The techniques used and the intricacy of the case can both affect the total rhinoplasty price. At your consultation with Dr. Rubinstein, he can examine your anatomy and treatment goals to determine the right treatment plan for you. He will then be able to provide you with an accurate quote for your customized nose job procedure. We accept several different forms of payment for your convenience:
- Cash
- Cashier’s check
- All major credit cards
- Personal checks (accepted a minimum of two weeks in advance of a scheduled procedure)
Dr. Rubinstein also offers in-office financing, helping patients to budget for their cosmetic goals.
What Happens During Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Depending on the complexity of your particular surgery, Dr. Rubinstein will recommend full general anesthesia or moderate sedation with a local anesthetic. In either case, you do not feel pain during the procedure. The two to three hour procedure involves Dr. Rubinstein making small, scarless incisions and skillfully reshaping your nose by adjusting the bone structure and cartilage. You will likely be required to wear nasal splints on the outside of your nose and soft “packs” inside your nose to protect the new shape until it sets. You will need a ride home after you awake from surgery and possibly a little help around the house for one to two days.
Questions About Your Rhinoplasty
When Will I Feel Back to Normal After a Rhinoplasty?
It is common to feel some discomfort and notice changes while recovering from rhinoplasty surgery. Congestion and difficulty breathing through the nose can persist for 2-3 weeks as the nasal passages heal. It is important not to blow your nose during this time to avoid disrupting the healing. Smiling may also look slightly different at first, as swelling in the nose area can temporarily affect the shape of the smile. Most patients find their smile returns to normal within 1-2 months as the majority of swelling subsides. Though small amounts of swelling may persist for up to a year, most patients feel back to their normal selves within 6-8 weeks after rhinoplasty.

Is Rhinoplasty Permanent?
Rhinoplasty results are permanent in most cases since the nose is composed of bone and cartilage that do not change over time. The reshaped nasal structure created during the surgery should remain intact for decades as long as the original rhinoplasty was performed properly and achieved reasonable goals. However, as a person ages, minor changes may occur – cartilage can weaken slightly and skin elasticity diminishes. These small changes often do not alter the overall outcome but may require minor revisions down the road. Generally, patients can expect the results of their rhinoplasty to last permanently.

What is Rhinoplasty Recovery Like?
How Long is Rhinoplasty Recovery?
The initial recovery process from the rhinoplasty procedure usually takes about two weeks, but it can take several months for all swelling to fully subside and reveal your final results. Throughout the healing process, Dr. Rubinstein will talk to you about your full recovery plan and next steps towards achieving the final results. For most patients, the nose job recovery timeline looks like this:
Week 1
The first 24 hours after surgery you will feel general pain and soreness around your nose, eyes, and forehead. Your face and eyes may be a little swollen or puffy. As a natural and expected part of healing, Dr. Rubinstein prescribes medication to help alleviate this discomfort. Ice packs applied gently to your face reduce swelling, but bruising will get worse before it gets better. The nasal packaging inserted in your nose to set the new shape is removed after a few days.
Week 2
Your nose will continue to feel stuffy for up to three weeks after surgery. External bandages, splints, and stitches are removed by Dr. Rubinstein in your two-week follow-up appointment. Most patients return to work during or after this week of recovery. During this week, patients start easing back into their routines, but still have some limitations on their physical activities.
Weeks 3-6
During this period, patients should be almost completely back to their normal routine as major side effects fade. Patients will still need to abstain from strenuous exercise and sporting activities that could cause trauma to the nose, as it will continue to be fragile through the end of this period.
Months 3-6
At this stage, most visible side effects should have healed and patients should be back to their normal routines without any restrictions.
Months 6-12
In some cases, minor swelling can persist through the first year of rhinoplasty recovery. Although you will be able to visibly appreciate the results of the procedure after a couple of weeks, it may take as long as a full year before the final results can be fully appreciated.
Is Rhinoplasty Recovery Painful?
While the rhinoplasty procedure is not painful at all, patients should expect some pain during the rhinoplasty recovery. It is during this period where the body is healing and feels the trauma of the surgical process. Fortunately, this pain should only last a few days, and can be managed with pain medications and other post-operative techniques.
